Funding and Finance
Existing sources of revenue are not keeping up with inflation. Just maintaining the existing transportation system in its current condition will become increasingly difficult even as Kansas seeks to expand its transportation system in many parts of the state. That expansion isn’t possible without a new funding package. Every likely solution combines many financing options above and beyond motor fuel taxes.

The Funding and Finance Topical Working Group (TWG) reviewed many cross-cutting issues, but its main goal is summarized below:
Revenue Sources: This group was also responsible for reviewing state and national information on existing transportation revenue sources along with new funding approaches that are beginning to emerge across the country. The group was asked to identify revenue sources that merit further consideration for a future transportation program in Kansas. The group’s recommendations were forwarded to the LRTP Policy Committee.
Project financing: The Funding and Finance group evaluated project financing strategies and other business approaches that are becoming more popular, and the group was asked to identify strategies that might work in Kansas in the future. The group’s recommendations were forwarded to the LRTP Policy Committee. |
